Don't worry they'll realize that texting and driving isn't worth it when they wake up on life support

...or, watch your loved one die! ...or, talk to someone's spouse, children, grandchildren to let them know they will never see this person in full life again.
Maybe everyone should work in an Emergency Room Trauma center for a day or two. I have been on both sides of the fence.

The law shoud be enforced. I am very happy that Oprah is doing this . There has been too many accidents and very irresponsible people texting and using their cell phones while driving.
We have always had to drive defensively, now it feels like a war zone. Every other person driving, is not aware of their surrounding, it's way scary.
The added stress of being on the road, just dealing with observing the drivers and trying to get away from them because you have no idea what they are going to do" is incrediable". Frustrated. Life is to short to have this added inconsiderate attitued for others lives. People have no idea that multi tasking and drving is the cause of so many accidents as it is.:(

Yup. My husband was in a nearly fatal accident because someone was texting while driving. Don't do it, folks. It's not worth it.

I| think anybody caught driving and texting should be given a 1000 dollar fine next time 5000, next time 5 years in jail next time 20 years next time death.
I agree, people need to be just as concerned about the people around them, even more... than about some text that can wait 2 minutes while you pull off to answer it or just wait until you arrive safely to respond.
It seems to be the me, me, me... now people who don't have a clue about perhaps not even, or ever having a phone. We all need to respect the ones on the roads that are respecting you by not phoning and texting while they are driving.
just because they are not using a phone doesn't mean they drive safely! i have seen a lot of accidents not involving a phone distraction but simply dumb people who can't drive

I can not understand how people could text while driving. hat could be more important than watching where one goes?
There are not enough police to catch everyone....one would hope that common sense and concern for one's, and other people's well being, would win out and drivers would put their phones away while they are driving.
While it may be difficult to actually enforse a ban on texting and/or talking, tougher laws and consequences will make people less likely to take the risk. People MUST be held accountable for their choices.
I agree. Our family is grieving deeply over the recent death of my brother David, father of 3 and grandfather of 7, who was hit and run over while on a morning walk, by a driver distracted by texting.
I KNOW the pain of loss we, his family and friends, are feeling. What must the driver of that vehicle and her family be thinking and feeling today? And it was all so unnecessary.
Our police MUST enforce laws against distracted driving, including a ban against sending and receiving text messages. And we, as passengers, must stop our friends from texting. Nothing should be more important than paying attention to the road and your driving while you are behind the wheel.
Talking on the phone while driving is against the law where we are in Canada, and yet I see people everyday blatantly chatting on their phones while driving in traffic, going through lights, going around corners when you've waited for them and because they are on their phones there is no acknowledgement that they even noticed that you paused for them. It's all about them and it is very selfish.
No...i don't think the police can properly enforce the law. Unless the person is texting right in the open for them to see, the only time the police will find out if someone is, or was texting, unfortunately, will be AFTER THE ACCIDENT.
I try to live by the idiom 'for every action there is a reaction'. What is sooooo important that you have to text while driving? Think about what would happen if you caused a serious accident by doing so.
The world is larger than the tip of your nose...please try to think/act beyond 'your space'. I don't want anyone I care about to be hurt or die because of someone else's careless ways.
Make the law both hands on the steering wheel and specify under what circumstances one can deviate from this. Naturally, smoking, drinking, makeup, eating, hand held phones and holding hands with your loved one will be no no's.
So when I first got my license, I kept my phone in my dashboard so I wouldn't even be tempted to look at it. Then I went through the phase of "if everyone texts and drives then it shouldn't be a problem if I do too". Boy oh boy was I wrong. After almost rear-ending and almost getting rear-ended by the person who was TEXTING AND DRIVING behind me, I realized that checking and responding to a text isn't worth the loss of anyone's life. I now have stopped texting and driving and I am able to keep my phone in the cup holder next to the divers seat without having the temptation to even look at it. My point is that no one is perfect and even a momentary distraction can cause a lifetime of damage. If you are expecting an important text tell the person before the expected text that you are going to be driving. Now the topic of talking on the phone and driving-which I find is acceptable ONLY if you have a bluetooth. I know my dad he gets a lot of calls and what not so whenever we go on vacation he makes sure to carry his bluetooth and he uses it intead of holding his phone to his ear. All in all it's common sense that Less Distractions = More Lives Saved

The Police cannot be every where at once. Self discipline, an awareness of other road users and not "Me me me me" is what is required.
