This is about the greatest idea of which I've heard. And it should be relatively inexpensive to implement. The possibilities are absolutely positive. Let's get behind this and demand action from our state governments. If they were to rechannel funds for all their crappy programs into this one we might be 100 lives safer this year.

This was a letter to the editor of the ITE Journal about a year ago:
Why no Allway Yields? Most drivers don’t come to a full stop at a Stop sign when there is no one to stop for. There is no reason why they should. They come to a “rolling stop” and treat the Stop sign as a Yield sign. The yield sign makes traffic more fluid, gives less delay and a higher vehicle output from the minor road. It saves time and fuel, reduces exhaust emissions and air pollution. Research found no difference in the safety records of the two devices. Most places in the USA have a paucity of yield signs and a plethora of stop signs and stoplights. There are no allway yields. Earlier editions of the MUTCD have called the stop sign a device that causes "substantial inconvenience to motorists." The underlying philosophy is to stop people in order to save them the inconvenience of slowing down.
