How Fire Safe Is Your Family?

Now’s the time to make a family fire plan.

Your kids may have learned to “stop, drop, and roll” in school, and a visiting firefighter may have given them some tips on what to do in case of a fire, but what have you done to prepare the whole family?

According to a new survey by Liberty Mutual Insurance and IAFF (International Association of Fire Fighters), more than half of parents say they have developed a fire escape plan in the last year – but only one in four have actually practiced it with their families.

The survey was conducted by Ketchum Global Research and Analytics from August 29-September 9, 2012, and reached 1,015 parents and 657 children age 7-13 nationwide.

The survey showed a gap between what parents believe their kids know and what they actually do know: The vast majority of parents surveyed say that their child knows what to do if there is a fire in the house, but only 40 percent of kids surveyed said that they have practiced a home fire drill. The survey revealed similar results regarding parents (79 percent) who reported that their family has a safe meeting spot outside the home; only one third of the kids surveyed actually knew of one (check out our accompanying infographic breaking down the survey results here).

And now, in time for October’s National Fire Safety Month and Liberty Mutual’s National Family Fire Drill Day on October 6th, it’s a perfect time to prepare the two-thirds of children who haven’t yet done a walk-through in the event of a fire in their home.

According to Liberty Mutual and IAFF, the combination of preparing and practicing makes a critical difference: 84 percent of kids who have practiced their escape plan are confident that they can get out of any room in their house during a fire emergency, and 90 percent know how to get to the family meeting spot outside their home.

Need help developing a plan? You can find a downloadable Fire Escape Checklist at BeFireSmart.com, as well as fun games for kids that will help reinforce the fire safety tips you’re learning as a family. And families can make it a team effort (for prizes!): This year, Liberty Mutual Insurance is rewarding one family’s good planning with a vacation to the Walt Disney World Resort; just upload a photo of your family practicing your plan on the Be Fire Smart Facebook page for a chance to win. And check out the Liberty Mutual “Where’s the Fire?” exhibit in INNOVENTIONS at Epcot, the largest interactive fire safety and education display in the United States. After all, a little preparation can go a long way for peace of mind.
