Emoticons on the Open Road

A controversial LED sign uses emoticons to tell your feelings to other drivers.

Thanks to a new gadget, emotions usually confined to your car can now be shared with other drivers, specifically those behind you. ThinkGeek’s new Drivemocion EX Series LED Car Sign will show your fellow drivers up to 16 facial and verbal expressions in a small, round screen that hangs in the back window of your car. The “emoticons” are selected for display via a remote control on the driver’s dashboard.

The Awesomer describes the device’s emoticons as a selection of, “16 decidedly non-middle-fingery verbal and facial expressions.” Among them, a verbal “sorry,” to use if you cut off another driver, an angry face, a scrolling “back off,” and even a “help” message.

But before you jump on the Drivemocion bandwagon, an article in Discovery News points out that the controversial device may not even be legal in every state. Furthermore, if Drivemocion becomes popular, questions will likely arise about taking drivers’ eyes off the road – whether they’re controlling the remote or staring at the emoticons in the back window of a nearby car.

Should Drivemocion be added to the list of forbidden distracted driving practices, like texting or making a call? Or if the car-friendly emoticons could possibly work to reduce road rage, do you think there should be a place for them on the open road? Take a look at the Drivemocion here and let us know what you think.
